The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment, through the General Directorate of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development, today met the Organic Agricultural Production Board with a single point of the day: launching the development of the strategic plan for organic agriculture in the Balearic Islands with a horizon of 2030. The budget for this plan amounts to a total of 52,147.50 euros and must be completed by November 1, 2025.
During the Board, the structure that the plan will have was presented. In this sense, it is developed through eight work axes and a total of 32 specific objectives. The awarded company explained to the agricultural organizations present the methodology that will be followed for the development of the project, as well as the approximate calendar for each of the phases.
In this sense, the general director of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development, Fernando Fernández, highlighted that the preparation of this plan was a request from the organic production sector of the Balearic Islands. In addition, he explained, it falls within the tasks of the Sectoral Table. He also recalled that organic production in the Balearic Islands is growing at a rate of 6% per year, since both in surface area and in producers and processors continues to increase year after year. "It is a sector that offers many opportunities because consumers are increasingly more aware of their production values", indicated the general director.
In this context, the development of this plan, Fernández insisted, must serve "to make a leap forward in strategy and see how we can improve the profitability and viability of farms, as well as incentivize demand and strengthen the structures of the organic sector and also analyze how to improve public policies aimed at its production".
It should be remembered that the 2030 horizon has to do with the fact that the European Green Deal sets as one of its specific objectives to reach 25% of the agricultural surface in organic production by 2023 (currently in the Balearic Islands this figure is approximately 19%).
However, during the meeting, the interest and commitment of all the agricultural organizations that have been part of the Board to achieve a plan that is feasible, realistic and, above all, can be developed effectively was noted.
