Alaior celebrates the festival of San Diego with the traditional preparation and distribution of the Saint's buns

Next Sunday, November 17, at 10:30 a.m., Alaior will celebrate the feast of Sant Diego with the traditional preparation, blessing and distribution of the emblematic Saint's buns.

This tradition, which years ago was limited almost exclusively to the family sphere and was on the verge of disappearing, was recovered by the City Council, which reincorporated it into the celebrations in honor of San Diego. The festivity commemorates the miracle of bread and roses, attributed to the patron saint of the barefoot Franciscans, Sant Diego d'Alcalà, and it is believed that having one of these buns favors the prosperity and protection of families throughout the year.

Between yesterday Thursday and today Friday, a group of volunteers, with the support of the Can Xeixa bakery (formerly Can Florencio), is in charge of kneading and baking more than 1.000 buns, made with 13 kg of dough. This dough, made with flour, a little cooked butter, lard and malauva tea, is worked in the shape of a rose, with the petals that open when they come out of the oven.

The buns will be distributed on Sunday the 17th during mass, as well as to residents of the municipal geriatric center and at home for sick people who cannot travel.

The Alaior City Council deeply appreciates the selfless dedication of the volunteers and the bakery, who year after year contribute to keeping this valuable local tradition alive.
