As a result of the LLARETSS project on the revaluation of sheep wool in the territories of Menorca and Mallorca, new initiatives emerged on the potential use of wool in the agricultural field. This study aims to demonstrate the benefits of wool padding in vineyards, in terms of improving soil thermoregulation, moisture conservation, obstruction of weed growth, control of microfauna that can attack crops and slow-release fertilization, while providing evidence of the harmless use of a product such as wool in crops. Although there is already evidence of the benefits that this practice provides, there are still some regulatory issues to resolve the generalization of its use.
The study will be carried out in the vineyards of Binitord for 9 months and will have the technical monitoring of Raoul Ferrer, an agricultural technical engineer specialized in the use of wool in agriculture.
This project has the collaboration of the Consell Insular de Menorca and the institutional support of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment.
