For the second consecutive year, the estimates of the Spanish Association of the Bakery, Pastry and Confectionery Industry (ASEMAC) on the demand for Roscones pointed to an increase with respect to the previous year, according to data compiled by the association. The estimate of this growth was between 3.5% and 4.5%, so this year it can be deduced that between one million and one million four hundred thousand more units have been consumed compared to the previous year. Therefore, this campaign exceeded the figure of 30 million units consumed.
The deseasonalization of this typical Christmas sweet is already a fact: “Its consumption is already brought forward to the month of November in commerce and in the hospitality industry. In addition, it goes beyond the day of Kings itself, reaching consumption throughout the month of January,” said Felipe Ruano, president of ASEMAC.
As for fillings, cream, custard and truffle continue to be the main preferences of consumers. On the other hand, last year references such as marzipan-flavoured filling and other flavours attracted attention. And as for sizes, the most consumed were medium-sized units (between 400 and 500 grams according to the manufacturer) and large units (between 750 and 1,000 grams).
Finally, the significant growth in the consumption of panettone “is not hindering the consumption of roscones, which would show that, contrary to what it may seem, they are not products that are in direct competition with each other”, Felipe Ruano concluded.
