Food, among the expenses that people over 55 expect to increase the most

At least this is what can be deduced from the results of the 5th Senior Consumer Barometer, recently presented by the MAPFRE Foundation in collaboration with Google, which indicates that housing, including household supplies (electricity, water or gas), and food will be the two areas in which people over 55 in Spain, who currently represent a group of more than 16 million people, expect to increase their spending the most in 2025.

The main data from this edition of the study are:

More than 44% of people over 55 in Spain estimate that they will spend more on housing, water, electricity and other fuels.
34% expect that they will spend more on food and non-alcoholic beverages.

Compared to the previous edition of the Barometer, the expenditure items remain practically unchanged, although with the difference that expenditure on food is now in second place, behind housing, a figure that has been influenced by inflation, which in 2024 fell significantly to levels of 2021.

Almost 4 out of 10 seniors (37%) intend to allocate fewer resources to alcoholic beverages and tobacco, something that according to the study is due to a greater awareness among seniors to incorporate habits that improve their health.
26% also believe that this year their spending on furniture and other household items and their maintenance will be lower.
