On January 1, 2025, the food loss and waste prevention bill will come into force, establishing the obligation of the producer or distributor to donate food that is in consumer condition. In this sense, the Government has decided to resume this legislative initiative given that each year about 65.5 kilos or liters of food are wasted per person in Spain, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

In this sense, the sustainable and reusable food packaging company, Roll’eat, explains that one of the keys to avoiding food waste is proper storage. “It is important to get used to using wrappers or containers with contact closure, since this can prolong the useful life of food and avoid waste,” details Meritxell Hernandez, CEO and founder of Roll’eat.

This law also establishes that companies in the food chain must have a prevention plan to minimize food losses. In the event that this waste occurs, it will be important to prioritize human consumption through the donation of food or its redistribution, in addition to encouraging the consumption of products considered “unaesthetic”, seasonal and organic foods. When this is not possible, other uses will be sought such as jams, feed or compost, according to the Ministry.

How to preserve food sustainably?

At Roll’eat they are committed to sustainable and environmentally friendly packaging, since they manage to reduce the carbon footprint by more than 98%, according to a study by EHS Techniques, and they manage to completely eliminate the use of aluminum foil, a great pollutant that is not biodegradable and can remain in the environment for up to 200 years.

Precisely, food waste increases waste and environmental impact, so avoiding it must involve society as a whole.
