Menorca will be present at the 'Food Film Menu 2024'. One of the most booming points in recent years, Menorcan gastronomy, will have a leading role in the short film contest organized by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT) with three proposals that will represent Menorca European Region of Gastronomy.
The objective of the event is to promote sustainable practices, local and traditional products and recipes related to the gastronomy of each region and for this reason the IGCAT will choose, through an international jury of experts, the 10 best films and will award the Best Young Director. During the month of September, the names of the recognized films will be made public and an online vote will begin on IGCAT's social networks so that the public can choose their favorite proposals.
By 2024, the Island will have three projections, two that are promoted by the Fundació Foment del Turisme de Menorca and another that is made by the Associació d'Educació d'Adults de Menorca. On the one hand, the production company Empatic presents 'Origin', a short film scripted by Lluís Illescas about a girl who grows up cooking with her grandmother until she becomes a chef who travels the world searching without luck for a unique flavor, until, on her return to Menorca, she realizes that that magic is in her grandmother's recipes. This screening is funded by the European Union – Next Generation EU.
The other proposal promoted by the Foment del Turisme Foundation is signed by the BeCreative agency and is the letter of introduction of the chef Cristina Pons Benavides as a representative of Menorca European Gastronomy Regime 2022 in the European Young Awards where she was second.
The third Menorcan option is presented by the Associació d'Educació d'Adults de Menorca, it is called 'Atemporal' and is also produced by Talaiot Estudios, with the script by Jaume Gomila, Aleix Pinadella and Gerard Dols. It is an experimental short that talks about the past, present and future of Menorcan gastronomy with the testimony of three cooks from three different generations through the preparation of three dishes typical of the Island.
Menorca has experience in these awards since in 2023 the short 'Second opportunities' by Laura Treserras and Gilbert González, from the Bendito Films production company, took the victory in the Innovation, Creativity and Work Opportunities category, while in 2022 the proposal ' Sa caseta de vorera', also by Gilbert González and Bendito Films, was awarded in the Young farmers and fishermen category. The same production company, in 2021, won the award for Best European Audiovisual Piece with 'A Food and Love Story'.
Furthermore, in 2020 Menorca was awarded through the proposal 'La cuina de Sant Joan', winner of the category Gastronomic experiences for visitors' while the short film 'Maonesa, la salsa universal' won in the Historical Routes category of Gastronomy, as well as the third absolute prize.
