Restauración Mallorca CAEB has shown its firm support for the actions undertaken by the fishermen of the Balearic Islands, who have joined the mobilizations in protest against the proposals of the European Commission that could limit fishing activity to just 27 days a year, a reduction of almost 80%. According to the organization, this drastic reduction in fishing days would seriously affect the quality of the supply of fresh fish products, essential not only for the feeding of citizens, but also for the gastronomic offer of the catering establishments of the autonomous community.
The president of Restauración Mallorca CAEB, Juan Miguel Ferrer, has declared that "the reduction in fishing days proposed by the European Commission represents a direct threat to the survival of the fishing sector, but also puts the entire gastronomic value chain of the islands at risk. Restaurants depend on fresh products, and this measure endangers the quality and competitiveness of our offer," he lamented, while demanding that this proposal be reconsidered "and a solution be found that guarantees the sustainability of the marine environment without sacrificing the economic viability of the fishing and catering sector."
Restauración Mallorca CAEB considers that a dialogue between European and national authorities and the fishing sector is urgent in order to find balanced solutions. The organisation reiterates its commitment to defending the interests of the sector and its support for all initiatives that promote the sustainability and economic development of the Balearic Islands.
Call for a resolution of the conflict
In this regard, Ferrer makes a firm call for the parties involved to “reach an agreement as soon as possible”, since an extension of the fishing strike would have a very negative effect on a sector that depends largely on local fishing to guarantee a positive quality standard.
In addition, Ferrer has stressed that the Christmas campaign is one of the most important for restaurants, and a shortage of fresh seafood could seriously affect the quality of service and the gastronomic offer. “It is crucial that solutions are found urgently that benefit both fishermen and restaurateurs”, concluded the president of Restauración Mallorca CAEB.
