The Social Welfare Minister of the Menorca Island Council, Carmen Reynés, together with the island director of the Elderly, Dependency and Functional Diversity, Melissa Manota, met with two members of the Celiac Association of Menorca to discuss their current situation.
During the meeting, they explained the problem of celiacs in Menorca finding variety in safe gluten-free catering options. Currently, there are only 12 accredited establishments on the island, some of which only open during the summer season. Within these 12 options are supermarkets, hotels, restaurants and patisseries.
The minister, together with the representatives, have proposed ideas to give more visibility to the association and to try to take advantage of the options and open up the range that Menorca has to be a friendly tourist destination towards celiac people and other similar groups, as well as to disseminate and communicate to the little ones what it is to be celiac and the new behaviors that must be acquired to respect the disease.
