Gastronòmicament/Mallorca - The Denomination of Origin Pla i Llevant – Mallorca has said goodbye in 2024 with elections to renew the governing board. This board, for four years, will be responsible for governing the activities of the protected designation of origin (DOP) Pla i Llevant. It is made up of eight representatives: four members representing the wineries, and four members representing the winegrowers. Each of them with a substitute.

The new president of the PDO Pla i Llevant is Xisca Armero i Adrover. It should be noted that Cristòfol Reus Amengual will once again assume the role of secretary. The vice-president is the winemaker Miquel Gelabert Fullana, who currently holds this position. Thus, Xisca Armero has been entrusted with the task of equaling, at least, the great work that Antoni Bennàssar has done for almost 20 years.

Xisca Armero is a native of Felanitx. Chemist, winemaker, wine advisor and student of the degree in agro-food engineering and the natural environment at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). She is the daughter of winemakers and winegrowers, she knows in depth, first-hand and from a very young age, everything related to this world. “I face this challenge with great enthusiasm and responsibility. To this day, a brilliant job has been done and I hope to be able to continue this legacy.”, says the new president of the DOP in her first days at the helm of this challenge.

Armero takes over from the one who has been president of this designation of origin from 2006 to January 2025, Antoni Bennàssar. Doctor and Professor of Biology at the UIB, he was born in Felanitx and is a wine lover, a great connoisseur and informant of Mallorcan wine culture. For many years he shared the presidency of this designation of origin together with that of Vi de la Terra Mallorca. Currently, he holds the position of president of the PDO Pla i Llevant.

The Pla i Llevant – Mallorca designation of origin includes 12 wineries and 85 winegrowers, with a total of 513 hectares of vineyards. It groups together 19 municipalities in the Pla i Llevant counties (Algaida, Ariany, Artà, Campos, Capdepera, Felanitx, Llucmajor, Manacor, Maria de la Salut, Montuïri, Muro, Petra, Porreres, Sant Joan, Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, Santa Margalida, Santanyí, Sineu and Vilafranca de Bonany).
